Nietzsche vehemently criticized the Victorian era’s repression of all things sexual. “The church fights passion by cutting it out, in every sense; its practice, its therapy, is castration,” he wrote. “It was Christianity, on the basis of its resentment against life, that first made something unclean out of sexuality.” Ironic sentiments for a man whose health continually suffered due to the lingering effects of a sexually transmitted disease.
